Descend RPG App Reviews

Yes but...

I just love any kind of Dungeon master, eye of the beholder or Captive ♡♡♡, kind of game but getting harm by hurting walls is very annoying, and also navigate without a map is way to boring... Beside that this rpg is really good, wish those flaws would be corrected ;)

Very good!

A very good game in a old Eye of the beholders rpg style. You find some bugs, but the is great!

Graphics Good, Gameplay Weak

Graphics are really good, but most of the touchable things are hard to hit, please enlarge the touchable area a bit. Food mechanics are nice but only if there is enough to eat. Fix that. Without a manual, some things arent clear e.g. magic. The first three magic scrolls are combat spells - they dont add to deeper gameplay. Exploration without a map and without savegames is challenging but only if you dont have to care about time (the food problem again). Suggestion: Remove the need to eat.

Nettes Retro Spiel

Back to the roots.

Meh

It has potential but I find Im wanting to like it more than I do. The hunger is annoying and Im finding theres little items to pick up. Fighting aspect is ok, you cant run so youre always having to stick the battle out. Enemies are boring and the backgrounds arent that interesting either. Good effort from the maker, I believe it is a solo project. Hope to see something new in the future that sparks more of an interest.

Descent Dungeon Romp

The grid-based gameplay works really well on the touchscreen - more games like this please, instead of trying to clumsily copy the mechanics of mouse-driven FPS computer games. (Though, I admit, Aralon worked well if you used the fixed view.) I enjoyed the retro atmosphere. Im not a huge fan of the random monster encounters because I felt forced to find the exit before running out of health and food. But it is quite forgiving and you can plod through most of the levels even though youll die dozens of times. You respawn with reduced health at the point you left off. My biggest complaint is the lack of any kind of map. Its quite easy to get lost in the dungeons, as many of them look alike. The NSEW indication at the top does help a bit, so you can follow one direction and eventually come across a something undiscovered. The game provided me with a few days (off and on) of gameplay. I am not a hardcore RPG player but was able to beat it without too much frustration. The game looked and played well on the iPad, but an HD version wouldve been nice. I look forward to seeing what the developer comes up with next.

Great game

I love the stressors in this game, could fix the leveling up situation, kinda hard to increase skill when lvl up. More complexity in items would b nice but simple is working.

Love this game!

Very addictive and challenging. More of this type of game is needed!

Dungeon Crawl Love

I was skeptical when I downloaded this game app. Boy, oh boy has it proven its awesomeness in spades. Classic dungeon crawl with interesting story - for free!? BONUS!

Decent but with some flaws

Monsters are not shown in the dungeon except during fights, which make the game look empty and unfinished. Food is very scarce so winning fights is easier than avoiding starvation! There is no mapping feature so either one creates a map on paper (not good for a handheld game) or risks starving in the dungeon. Also, there is no dialog with NPCs (there are only enemies), and there are no quests besides getting deeper into the dungeon. The game would be much better with more food (or food being more nourishing), automap, and roaming creatures. For a much better dungeon crawler, get Undercroft!

Finally back to dungeon master!!!

Sorry i was wrong: its not free, but it worths the money! its a GREAT game!!!

Nicely done!

In the same class as other tile-based, dungeon crawlers, like Undercroft and Questlord. Your party is set, and comprised of only two characters. It very much works here. I might add that, personally, I thought Amarras portrait was absolutely beautiful. I never tired of looking at her face.

Potential awesomeness.

I got so excited seeing this game I purchased it not realizing it was iPod only. It sure would look nice on a big iPad screen. But, I cant knock it for that. It looks great, and so far, seems like it will be an excellent game. But... can it be... no multitasking? That is a pretty huge bummer. Sometimes I only have a few minutes to pick up and play. It sort of seems like no new app should come without support for this. Get this going and Ill give it 5 stars, but its a heck of a blow to the game not having it (at least for me). Make it universal and I will find a way to give you 6! I look forward to playing the hell out of this game.

Like the graphics and gameplay kinda a merge between the turn based RPGs I grew up with and current graphics

Much like dungeon master!

Love it so far ... Especially getting hurt Bumping into walls

Meh...

Sure its okay, I was just expecting something like Morrowind. Its just me. Others would probably appreciate this more than me.

Pretty good..... Has a lot of future potential

The gameplay is good overall. Ive played some old-school games similar. Ive put in about 2 hrs so far, and just a couple of things Ive noticed: Game system works very well. I like the health mana hunger and xp system. Battle system is simple, but quick, so it doesnt get in the way. Only thing that I would suggest be fixed is there is only the limited food that can be found in boxes and chests. If you die, its not hard to get in a starvation cycle, as at death they only restore you at maybe 10% of health. Thats not so unfair, but places to rest are few, so you have to use your precious food to restore health before you have to fight again (because at 10% you wont last long) and once you have eaten it, there is no more to be had. Maybe if random food was added dropped in battle it would make exploring less painful when you try to search for solutions to puzzles, or for keys and keep dying of starvation. As for exploration. Maybe a map of explored areas would be nice, as without one, with the combination of sparse food, and large maps that look extremely similar i found I kept going in circles. At least that would make it easier to find rest areas. I will keep trying this game, as I love the concept. Just needs to be tuned a bit. Once you get stuck in a no food cycle, and there being no way to load a past game, you dont want to keep playing, and dont want to start over again. Id recommend the game to anyone who likes this sort of old school rpg. I hope a few things are added in an update to keep me playing.

Good idea badly executed

I was hoping for an eye of the beholder genre , not even close There is no incentive to fight, no map and if you die you are pretty much stuck unless you are lucky to remember where is the resting place or have a potion at hand I say skip

Awesome RPG

To Quest fans and Undercroft fans- this game is for you... The game even seems difficult at points... without any food you cant live! Its hard to get past level 3, but you will. You can put lots of time into this game and its fun!! Maybe tweak the food system though cause Ive starved to death like 50 times.

Not perfect but...

...I needed to rate 5 stars to weigh against the lower scores :) Steve, great job! I like the hunger meter and random encounters, which I know youve gotten a lot of flack for. Also, the character portraits are excellent (gritty, schmitty, swhat I say!). Had to start over from the beginning after getting stuck at a difficult forced encounter at the end with only one health potion. Playing through a lot smarter the second time! No auto map is challenging but doable without busting out the graph paper. You place enough landmarks (furniture) to keep the rooms differentiated. Recommended to anyone that enjoyed Eye of the Beholder and the like! Bottom line: totally worth the $3.99! I know youre making it easier with v.1.1 due out soon, so Im going to try to finish it before then! ;)
